Abstract

Teaching method and field experience courses that focus on teaching make up only a small fraction of the postsecondary coursework required for teachers, especially for prospective secondary teachers. As undergraduates, prospective teachers also take arts and science courses in the subject matter fields they will teach, as well as arts and science courses intended to provide a broad base of knowledge (i.e., courses taken as electives or to fulfill general education requirements), and "foundation of education" courses in areas such as educational psychology, social-philosophical education studies, or history of education.
