Abstract

This chapter examines the capacity limits imposed on wireless systems by the constructs of information theory. It briefly discusses the evaluation of channel capacity in some fading dispersive environments of wireless communications systems. The chapter first provides some standard results on the capacity of single-input single-output (SISO) communication channels. It then investigates the issue of channel capacity for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels, where frequency-flat fading is assumed for simplicity. Finally, the chapter provides some brief historical notes and recommendations for further reading. Controlled Vocabulary Terms channel capacity; Fading; information theory; MIMO; wireless…
