Abstract
Initially, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission and thyristor-based reactive compensation, which form part of the flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) family of equipment, are presented. New developments in switches, such as insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), and converters, like voltage source converters (VSCs), have expanded the functions of these devices, thereby broadening the possibilities for application in power transmission. Basic models of static compensators (STATCOM) and static synchromous series compensator (SSSC) are used to introduce the steady-state model of the unified power flow controller (UPFC).
