Abstract
Stress induces the release of many stress mediators in the brain. Joëls and Baram show that the spatial and temporal niches of action of these mediators overlap and discuss how different mediators interact to enable appropriate responses to diverse stressors. The impact of stress on brain function is increasingly recognized. Various substances are released in response to stress and can influence distinct neuronal circuits, but the functional advantages of having such a diversity of stress mediators remain unclear.
