The Notional Category of Modality

Abstract

This is the thoroughly expanded and updated 2012 version of my 1981 paper "The Notional Category of Modality". It appears as chapter 2 of my Oxford University Press book Modals and Conditionals. Please rely on this version, rather than the original 1981 paper (or the 1991 handbook article, which is also archived here), if you want to discuss my work on modality. The new version clarifies the older work and relates it to the contemporary discourse on modality.
