The aristocratic vice: The medical treatment of drug addiction at the Homewood Retreat, 1883-1900

Abstract

For most of the nineteenth century, drug addicts did not constitute a deviant social group but were simply individuals guilty of a specific moral transgression. By the 1920s, however, addicts were clearly social deviants, defined by both illness and by vice, and demanded institutional isolation.
