A new borehole failure criterion for estimating in situ stress from breakout span

Abstract

We have verified experimentally in two granites that a simple polyaxial strength criterion, originally suggested by Mogi (1971), correlates well with the state of stress at breakout edge on the borehole wall, and can be utilized for the calculation of one of the in situ principal stresses from knowledge of the breakout span and the other two principal stresses. Les résultats expérimentaux obtenus en laboratoire sur deux granites differents montrent que le simple critére de rupture, proposé par Mogi (1971), offre une excellente corrélation avec l’état de contrainte au bord de la zone de rupture (“breakout”) \`a la paroi d’un trou de forage.
