A new method to determine rock strength from an index test on fragments of very small dimension

A new method to determine rock strength from simple test on rock fragments has been devised. The test measures the harness of the small size rock chips produced by the drilling bit by means of a spherical indenter of 1 mm in diameter. During this study the main parameters affecting such a methodology have been identified. Excellent correlation with the UCS has been established on a batch of 21 different sedimentary rocks.
