A rock mass strength concept for coal seams incorporating the effect of time

Abstract

A concept for coal seam strength is proposed based on quantification of the coal seam structure using the RMR system. A strength criterion is developed for use with the numerical approach to design, supplementing empirical strength formulations of the strength formulas currently used in pillar design.
