Abstract

The study of mortality levels and trends has long occupied demographers and physicians alike. Records of mortality are scanty and unreliable for more than one-third of the world’s population in general and Africa in particular. As a result, much of the demographic analysis needed in order to formulate plans for social and economic development is seriously hampered (United Nations, 1955).
