The creator of Fig. 20.1 was either conversant with the psychological literature on sex differences or an astute observer of behavior. Indeed, males use cardinal directions such as north and south more than females, who tend toward relative directions such as left and right (Ward, Newcombe, & Overton, 1986). This is one of a miscellany of human sex differences in the realm of spatial behavior.
