X-ray computerized tomography: Determination of heterogeneities in rock samples

Abstract
The X-ray Computerized Tomography (CT) method was applied for the characterisation of heterogeneities at small scale in intact rock samples. The CT-results were used in a qualitative and quantitative way. Qualitatively fractures and inclusions were studied and different types of artifacts were encountered. Using artificial glass samples, the artifacts were studied quantitatively. A calibration was conducted to determine the real width of a fracture from the CT-data. This calibration was applied and checked on a natural sample.
