The emerging role of ferroptosis in inflammation

Abstract
Ferroptosis is a newly discovered type of cell death triggered by intracellular phospholipid peroxidation that is morphologically, biologically and genetically distinct from other types of cell death. Ferroptosis is classified as regulated necrosis and is more immunogenic than apoptosis. To date, compelling evidence indicates that ferroptosis plays an important role in inflammation, and several antioxidants functioning as ferroptosis inhibitors have been shown to exert anti-inflammatory effects in experimental models of certain diseases.
