Comparison of some methods for analysis of piled rafts

This paper reviews a number of methods for analysing and designing piled raft foundations. The methods fall into three categories: simplified hand calculation methods, approximate computer-based methods, and more rigorous numerical methods. These methods are then applied to two cases: a) a hypothetical case b) a published case study. It is demonstrated that there can be considerable differences among the predicted pile-raft responses from the methods considered, especially when the capacity of some of the piles is fully utilized, and the load-settlement behaviour is nonlinear.
