Soils frost heaving and thaw settlement

Abstract
Freezing, whether natural or artificial, causes soils to heave. This heaving results from large movements of water. At the freezing front (0°C isotherm) that separates the frozen and unfrozen zones, there is a large depression or cryogenic suction.
