Matrix Solid‐Phase Dispersion

Abstract

This chapter helps the students to understand the principle of matrix solid-phase dispersion (MSPD). MSPD is used for the extraction and fractionation of solid, semi-solid, or viscous biological samples. The process of MSPD is analogous to solid-phase extraction except that the sample, in this case, is not a liquid. MSPD differs in the following respects: the sample is dissipated, by mixing with the support material over a large surface area; and the sample is homogeneously distributed through the column. The concept of MSPD is that a sample is ground with a support material, e.g. octadecylsilane, silica, alumina, or florisil in a glass or agate mortar with the pestle for a short time, e.g. 30 seconds.
