Elastin and collagen fibres in cutaneous wound healing

Abstract

Skin forms the outer barrier of the body. Upon injury, successful wound healing in normal skin restores tissue damage and counteracts the loss of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and cells. Collagens and elastin are the most abundant structural proteins of the ECM. In homeostasis, collagen type I is the prevalent form, but it is replaced by type III collagen upon wounding, and only later remodelled. In turn, unsuccessful healing results in scars, which tend to be inflexible and inelastic as compared to normal elastic dermis.
