• Interactions between starch and phenolics in film were mostly non-covalent. • Starch films and coatings can encapsulate phenolics for controlled release. • Optimal composition of phenolics addition is needed to obtain desired films. • Starch films and coatings with phenolics addition can effectively preserve foods. • Strategies to reduce the cost of the films and coatings with phenolics are needed.
