Impact of Microplastics on Human Health: Risks, Diseases, and Affected Body Systems

Abstract

This review article aims to highlight the potential harm caused by microplastics (MPs) in different organs and systems and underscore the need for further investigation into their action mechanisms. MPs, such as polystyrene, polypropylene, and polyethylene, significantly impact human health, causing inflammation in the respiratory and gastrointestinal systems, compromising immune function, and increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and neurotoxicity. These effects are largely attributed to the role of MPs in disrupting hormonal regulation, which can lead to reproductive disorders and an elevated risk of cancer.
