Abstract

The prevalence and the burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) are both rising steadily around the world (1).Much of this rise can be attributed to a major expansion of hypertension and, especially, diabetes mellitus in aging populations.CKDs future trends are inexorably linked to trends in diabetes, which is currently estimated to be the attributable cause of 36% of the CKD burden (1).Thus, it behooves all interested in the care and prevention of CKD to take note of whats happening in the world of diabetes.Three primary sources currently provide information on the global frequency of diabetes: the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study (1), the NCD Risk Factor Collaboration (NCD-RisC) (2), and the IDF Diabetes…
