Abstract
The Standard Babylonian Epic of Gilgamesh is traditionally interpreted through the archetype of the heroic king and his wild companion. This article challenges that reading by arguing that the epic systematically inverts these roles to conduct a profound philosophical investigation into the nature of strength. Through close textual analysis framed by contemporary psychological and ecological theory, it demonstrates that Gilgamesh, despite his divine lineage and royal power, is characterized by profound existential, cognitive, and emotional weaknesses.
