What is a field? Is it an independent entity, a property of matter, a mathematical convenience, or something more fundamental? From Faraday’s lines of force to Maxwell’s electromagnetic equations, from Einstein’s gravitational field to the quantum fields of the Standard Model, the field concept has become the central language of fundamental physics.
