Abstract
Periodontitis is now recognized not merely as a localized oral condition but as a systemic disease linked to over 70 communicable and non-communicable conditions. This Review explores the key mechanistic pathways-or "gum-shots"-underpinning the systemic impact of periodontitis. Seven interwoven mechanisms are identified. The first, microbial translocation, involves oral pathobionts and virulence factors breaching anatomical barriers and gaining systemic access via hematological, respiratory, and enteral routes, contributing to tissue damage at extra-oral sites.
