Abstract
The three-register read is a methodology for diagnosing systems that stipulate a target and operate to deliver it. A target is read in three parallel registers. The explicit-claim register is what the target publicly claims about its stipulated phenomenon. The deployed-import register is what the target must put to work for any of its claims to operate. The success-condition register is what the target has stipulated as its phenomenon by calling itself a system for delivering X. The three registers do different jobs and the geometry between them produces six diagnostic patterns and twelve named diagnostic moves.
